Light In The Darkness

The image of a lighthouse has been deeply impressed upon my heart and mind. As I consider my daily calling and my continued pursuit of sharing the gospel online, I keep returning to this picture. I envision ships far from shore, navigating turbulent waters, searching for direction, safety, and a way home. In those moments, the words of Jesus come to mind: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14).

That passage has become an inspiration for me as I consider both my next steps and my continued steps in ministry. There are certainly days when I do not feel like doing everything this calling requires, but deep within, I know that God has me on this journey for a reason.

A lighthouse can only shine when its light is working. A lamp can only burn when there is oil within it. In the same way, I have come to understand that my communion with God is the oil in my lamp. It is the source that keeps the light burning. My time with God strengthens me, steadies me, and empowers me to continue shining regardless of the situation, the weather, or the conditions surrounding me. Communion with God stabilizes my soul so that I can faithfully and brightly do what God has called me to do.

And the same is true for you. You have been called to shine.

Your calling may not be to preach, teach, or stand behind a pulpit, but God has still called you to practice Kingdom living wherever He has placed you. In your career, your family, your community, your business, your classroom, and through the gifts He has given you, you have an opportunity to reflect the light of Christ.

The world is filled with people navigating turbulent waters, looking for hope, direction, and something that is steady. May our lives point them toward Jesus. Stay filled with the oil of communion with God, keep your light burning, and keep shining wherever God has positioned you.
